Scary Mommy Thanksgiving 2014

Scary Mommy Thanksgiving

*Update: The Scary Mommy program has been retired. You can still see the local food pantry or Salvation Army for help!

Hunger sucks. Big time. I challenge you, if you don’t know what hunger feels like. Skip dinner and snacking, and see how cranky you get in one day. Some kids only get breakfast and lunch at school, through the free lunch program, and have no food at home. I can’t imagine how these kids concentrate on their school work with their little tummies growling at them. I know if I miss a meal hangry isn’t even the right word, I turn into a bear on a chocolate-seeking rampage.

Do the turkey dance!

Scary Mommy has been a favorite site of mine for quite a while. Humorous, irreverent, and non-judgmental, the Scary Mommy posts are always a delight.

APPLICATIONS CLOSE NOVEMBER 1!!

Way back in the mists of time in 2011, Jill Smokler wrote a post about Thanksgiving called A Thanksgiving For Everyone. The response to this article about hunger during the holidays was overwhelming, with Mommies speaking up, wishing they could help. (Saint) Jill started matching up families in need with people who could help, and this has evolved into a registered 501(c)3 charity called Scary Mommy Nation.

In 2013 this effort exploded, with interviews with Parents, ABC, Queen Latifah, and more. 2,765 families received assistance.

Scary Mommy Thanksgiving Testimonials

It is the testimonials from mommies who need help that really get to me. Have a hankie ready and read some of the stories here. These are moms and dads just like you and me, having a hard time and needing a little help.
Or read my story from last year: Our Family Thanksgiving in Poverty – A Glimpse at the Other Side of the Holidays

This Isn’t How It Was Supposed To Be

As I write this post on 10/22/14, 558 families have been helped, and 500 are waitlisted. The application form is closed until the currently waiting families are matched with donors. The moment the application form is reopened the applications will come pouring in.

Scary Mommy Thanksgiving Project

Ways to Help

  • If you need help check the application form here (closes 11/1)
  • RUN, don’t walk, to the nearest donation button. You can give as much or as little as you can afford.
  • Have a business in need of someone to give oodles of money to? Make a donation of $500 or more and get recognition from Scary Mommy’s HUGE fanbase.
  • Buy this guaranteed-to-make-you-laugh-until-you-cry book Scary Mommy’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays for $2.99 and a portion of sales will benefit Scary Mommy Thanksgiving Project
  • Don’t have money to donate but want to help? Help Team Scary Mommy spread the word! Rack up that karma – FB Share, Lovin, Pin, Plus, Reddit, Retweet, Stumble, Tumble and otherwise social media blitz! Better yet, write a quick post on your blog. Or just share this one!

If you share/post/blitz let me know and I will Like, Heart, Retweet, or otherwise push them like that crack-like candy people smuggle around during the holidays.

We did the turkey dance! Take a turkey dance selfie or video and post to help spread the word and fight hunger! Use #turkeydanceforhunger and/or #scarymommythanksgiving. (I stole the term twurkin from Helen at Bubblegumchic.)

You’ve Been Booed Free Halloween Printable

You've Been Booed Free Printable from The More With Less Mom

Being booed is a tradition that has been around for years. It is an act of kindness you can practice in your neighborhood. Talk to your kids about giving and acts of kindness while you create your own boo.

This printable is one page. It is almost monochrome, with mostly black and white, a little more goth than most of the boo’d printables out there. (straight to download)

On the left the background is a gravestone. There is a vintage clip art ghost which is black and white and orange. It says, “We’ve Been Booed,” in red text. On the right is a graphic with a Gorey-esque graveyard frame, and it reads, “You’ve Been Booed.” There are instructions for your recipients.

You can cut these elements out and use your own crafty skills and overflowing scrapbooking supplies to snazz it up.

Text from the printable instructions:
You’ve Been Booed
Keep this fun Halloween tradition going:
1. Enjoy your treat
2. Make two copies of the instructions and sign (or download from www.TheMoreWithLessMom.com)
3. Hang the “We’ve Been Booed” sign on your front door or window
4. Create two treats with goodies, crafts, or other fun stuff, including a copy of the signs
5. Surprise two neighbors who have not been booed

Our Boo

The variety of things you can put in your boo is endless. At some point I will accept the challenge of making a post about the many frugal ways you can do this activity.

Our boo would have cost $5 at the dollar store, except I already had everything on hand.

I included the following:

  • One white ghost bag to hold everything, from the dollar store
  • Two bags of candy, $1 each from the dollar store
  • One pair fun stripey socks from the dollar store
  • One floral spray of black roses from the dollar store
  • One Halloween card that I made (and sell in my shop)
  • You’ve Been Booed printables, cut out, glittered, and ribbon added

Attack of the Killer Mousie – I Made a Funny

Here’s a little humor for you, a true story from my little life. I made a funny. Or the mousie did. Something like that.

Attack of the Killer Mousie from The More With Less Mom

So, yeah. That was fun. Here I am, driving along to pick up kid #2. I look over, for some unknown reason (like I’m psychic or my predator-radar pinged), and there is a cute furry little rodent on the floor of the car. Scurrying towards me. It is a demonic attack mousie with fangs, wings, and supermouse speed. Or possibly just fur. I do not, at this point, scream. Or crash the car and die.

After the adrenaline spike, I semi-calmly pull over, mostly not in the middle of the intersection of my backwoods road. How can something so small trigger fight-or-flight (all flight) in a fully grown human? Anyways, I start muttering at the mouse as I get out. I do an angry dance around the car, yelling things like “stupidhead” as I open doors to let him smell freedom. I run around the car trying to see him. I poke under the seat with sticks trying to find him.

Please note: I do not have an inherent fear of mice, just things faster than me climbing on me. Especially when I am wearing a skirt and have my hair down, for additional places to get caught and struggle and bite me.

Suddenly he zooms out from under the seat to under the dash, and that’s when I scream. Not a little scream, oh no. A cliché, cartoon woman-jumping-up-on-the-table, full volume, wake-the-neighbors shriek. I did not know I could make this noise. We begin a game of cat-and-mouse (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), where I poke under the seat until he runs under the dash, then I bang on the dash until he runs under the seat, all while he is apparently impervious to the fresh air just past a one inch lip on the side of the floor.

20 minutes later I’m still yelling at the mouse, things like, “I will whip your little mousie butt!” and “Get out of my car!” in death metal growl. I am picturing the people in the nearby houses tittering from behind the curtains at my wrath. I text my poor waiting teen, “Can’t come get you. Trapped by mousie in the car.” Luckily I live near nice people who stop and ask if I am ok, and a mom and her son stop and help me poke sticks under the seat. After many minutes of enthusiastic stick-poking we conclude that the mousie must have left, and they leave.

I had started the car to see if that would flush him out (hopefully not kill now-traumatized mousie) but he was a no-show. Lo and behold, as soon as I start moving the car, guess who shows up. In a marvelous show of fortitude, I do not scream or crash the car, again. I go back to my spot of shame in the intersection. I pull out a travel coloring tray, to try to sweep the little guy out. He pops out of the spot I didn’t expect him from, I give a mini-shriek, and I masterfully sweep him out of the car with my trusty coloring tray. I jump out of the car, yelling, “stay the heck out of my car bad mousie,” like he can leap like supermouse back in, and slam all the doors shut.

Being properly paranoid, I sit and wait for any rodent friends, banging on things and yelling in as threatening a way as this mom can manage. Finally I decide it might possibly be safe to get to school so I can let the rodents eat the teen while I run, and I continue on my way. That was my adventure of the day, and so ends this mousie saga.

Back-to-School Giveaway Palooza Event

Generally speaking, I don’t do giveaways. I like sparklies as much as the next person, but I’m trying to get rid of stuff, not bring more in. However. Ummm… Kindle Fire. Since I use my Nook (ahem) multiple times a day, and I know Amazon has more free books, I am all over the literary excess. And I could find lots of sparklies at Target for $100, and just hang them from the ceiling of my overflowing home. Or something.

Blogosphere Tour & My Little Friends

Blogosphere Tour & My Little Friends

My Thrift Store AddictionCecilia Lynne of My Thrift Store Addiction recently contacted me about joining in on a blog tour. She has an Etsy shop and shares pretty, thrifty things.

Basically for a blog tour I answer a few questions about myself, and then introduce you to a few blogger friends to learn about them. I like to read about how other people work through the creative process. I like to share, so I’ll just tuck my social awkwardness back up and give it a go. When you’re done don’t forget to visit my little friends and sprinkle some love on them.

Here are the questions for this little quiz show:

1. What Are You Working On Right Now?

Freakin’ everything. I’m so bad at starting a lot of different projects, hitting some supply or info I don’t have, and putting it on the back burner. Right now I have drafts for a frugal party plan and a daily routine for littles going. Also for my shop I have a line of weekly planner boards to design, make, glitter, photograph, and post. In “real life” kid #3 is starting kindergarten and Mom is TWEAKING OUT. This Mom is not ready. My little extrovert is totally ready. Not so, Mom.

2. How Does My Work Differ From Others in This Genre?

I try to focus on the frugal family. I only post a couple times a month, but my posts are thorough and well-researched. Maybe too thorough, my detail-oriented brain is not good for you poor saps reading this on a smartphone with a teeny weeny screen, scrolling for forever. I swear, those nuggets of wisdom are worth it! I really feel like I have something to share and while a lot of posts have “been done,” I try to contribute things that are of value and (at least somewhat) original. I’m just weird (and poor) enough for my perspective to be helpful to some people

3. Why Do I Write/Create What I Do?

Because for fun. No, wait… I think there’s currently a gap in women’s (and men’s) education. Moms are working full time, or not even present, and don’t teach us how to make a house a home. People don’t know how to cook, or clean, or balance a checkbook, or fold a dang fitted sheet. I wish I had a mother or a grandma to ask about things. But I don’t. So I’m going to be the internet’s grandma (yes, in my 30s). I like to help people. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to do things with a minimum output of resources (picture empty wallet here). I can share that knowledge and hopefully help someone else.

My shop is an extension of my love for sharing. I’ve always liked crafting, making things sparkly (I’m part raccoon), and working with graphics to make pretties. And I totally love giving people presents. I feel like every item I make is a present for someone, and I put the love in there. This is my way, like so many others, to make a little money doing something that I enjoy. I am so pleased to be able to search on Etsy and find something beautiful that some other mom, maybe even a neighbor, put sweat, tears, and glitter into.

4. How Does Your Writing/Creating Process Work?

This is something I’ve been working on. That whole process thing. It’s not supposed to be me brandishing posts when they strike me, this is what I have heard. I’m always considering things I could write about. But often these ideas go on my mile-long idea list and never make it further than that. Life usually prompts the topics I am posting about. If I have a birthday party and I do a bunch of research to do it without spending too much money, I then organize that information and make an article with it. I always make a monthly real food meal plan, so I share that. Currently I’m working on an editorial calendar, so I can have posts ready when holidays and things roll around. Except my meticulous mind has to do it RIGHT and COMPLETELY so it will take me forever. And then be awesome.

My items are created in a similar way. Except finding money for supplies to make a prototype is hard with no disposable income, so I have the added challenge of creating items with little initial output. This is not a bad thing, it just means I have STACKS of cereal boxes and egg cartons towering over me. Luckily, glitter is pretty cheap.

Five4FiveMeals.com

Lydia from Five4FiveMeals.com lives in South Alabama with her husband and two toddlers. She has always loved telling stories. She started her career as a newspaper reporter. After five years she traded in her reporters notebook and black wedges for bare feet and diaper changes. She started blogging in 2012 and still tells stories, but this time her own story of surviving motherhood in the country. She and her husband recently paid off their debt and she talks openly about that along with making videos about cooking, the hilarity of motherhood and surviving the baby years. She recently gave up sugar… and already regrets it.

Free Printable Vintagesque Bedtime Routine from The More With Less Mom

In my shop I am introducing two versions of a bedtime routine item. It is a loverly chart with vintage illustrations. The background is a scrolly frame around a tan dictionary page. It has that look almost like an old botanical print with sepia tones.

I have tried several routine methods over the years. I have learned that if I just slap something together it ends up lost under the fridge more than it gets used. And if I make it pretty I will stick with it longer. As a parent I know establishing routines and a schedule is important to help children gain confidence, as well as set them up for a good day.

With Kid #3 starting kindergarten in the fall, I want to help solidify routines at home so she feels like there isn’t too much change happening. Also I want to make sure we have established a solid bedtime routine so I know she will get enough rest. We all know how much fun a kindergartener with not enough rest can be.

Here I am sharing a version of our bedtime routine, it is a loverly printable with vintage illustrations. 11 tasks are included: clean up, wash hands, snack, pick out clothes, potty time, bath time, put pajamas on, brush hair, brush teeth, story time, tucked in. The background is a scrolly frame around a tan dictionary page.

This prints at 8×10, so you could just frame it and stick it on the wall as is, or mount it on regular scrapbook paper.

You could print out two copies and cut out the tasks, glitter the edges, and mount them as we did above. We also cut out the frame and edged it with glitter, but this was some fine cutting work. We mounted ours with foam tape so it looked dimensional. I used super fine glitter on the name and the “bedtime routine” title as well. Because you can never have too much glitter. We finished ours with a spray craft sealant.
